Hello, I’m Mikey Giffen. I’m a Consultant Oral Surgeon and a trained appraiser for dental professionals. As an educational supervisor, I’ve spent years helping dental trainees reflect on their practice and plan their next steps.

04 / Why I Started This

A Clear, Independent Appraisal.

I started The Dental Appraiser because appraisal is now part of NHS dentistry in England, but many dental professionals are appraised by their own principal, or not at all. The service is for dentists, hygienists, therapists, practice principals, associates, locums, portfolio clinicians and specialists. The service also covers dental professionals in teaching and government roles, aesthetics practitioners, clinicians whose practice is limited to one branch of dentistry, salaried service dentists and other non-clinical roles. Military dental personnel in the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force can also book, from Lieutenant to Commander. Appraisals can cover NHS, private practice or mixed NHS and private work. The appraisal reviews your professional work, learning and development needs. The appraisal is not a check of how many patients you see or how much work you produce. I do not employ you or decide your pay, contract or UDAs.

You prepare your evidence. The appraisal reviews your work and sets out a personal development plan for the year ahead. I do not advise your practice about your contract or UDAs.

Information shared during the appraisal remains confidential within the limits set out in the appraisal agreement. The agreement explains the steps I must take if a serious patient-safety concern arises.

06 / A Note on NHS Appraisals

The practice stays part of the process.

For a funded NHS appraisal, the discussion focuses on NHS work. An external appraiser must be agreed with your practice or contract holder, including any arrangement for the UDA contribution. This service does not replace the employer-led appraisal process for salaried NHS dental staff.
